Fort Frances pulp mill owner allowing tours of shuttered site

The new owner of Resolute’s former pulp and paper mill in Fort Frances, Ontario, has offered a 90-day window for companies to tour the defunct plant.

According to Northern Ontario Business, the numbered company associated with brownfield developer Riversedge Developments is allowing interested parties into the mill buildings to evaluate whether or not the mill is still viable as part of an agreement reached with the Town of Fort Frances.

The town council has continued to push for the possibility of the mill reopening, and, as its part of the new agreement signed October 3, will forgive the nearly $490,000 in unpaid property taxes still owing on the mill.

Justus Veldman, CEO of Riversedge Developments, told Northern Ontario Business he doesn’t believe the mill will be restarted since no parties have expressed serious interest in the five years since Resolute closed it, but that the extra three months might repair the relationship with the town.
